Battleship-2012-poster

Before i continue with my blog, just want to put a disclaimer for those who haven’t watched the movie yet, this blog contains some spoilers about Battleships.

I am a fanatic of anything that moves in the ocean or seas like submarine, torpedos, naval fleets, canyons, navy seals, sea men, aircraft carrier, jet plane, etc. Must see movies are Titanic, Pearl Harbor,  and many more because it gives me new persperctive or new horizon of thinking. It gives me giggles and new discoveries.

As I watch this movie again who was first shown last 2012 I saw some great insights that we can apply as a believer of the Lord to ponder for a while.

1. WE ARE IN A BATTLE

We are on the battle everyday of our life whether we like it or not, the question is are you ready? Waking up early in the morning is already a battle between discipline if you are a:

Parent who needs to wake up early in able to cook breakfast for your family everyday, or a Student who face challenges going to school and learning so many things and doing a lot of unnecessary stuff, or a Working person who needs to face his/her dominant boss.

Whether it is a loss of a job, taking on a new job and new responsibilities, financial problems, declining health, broken relationships, loss of loved ones, uncertain tomorrows, or a host of other challenges, each of us experiences times of doubt, fear and discouragement.

As a Christian, our greatest battle is doing sins over and over again. Battle of the flesh, the quick satisfaction that we get on sinning and feeling sorry or guilty after doing it. My mentors once said that “Our sins did not started first in a physical manifestation but the battle starts at the head”. If you let sin win in your head then the physical action comes in.

I think God knows this battle would happen and that is why he gave us clear instructions in Joshua 1:7-8. MSG version says:

…make sure you carry out The Revelation that Moses commanded you, every bit of it. Don’t get off track, either left or right, so as to make sure you get to where you’re going. And don’t for a minute let this book of Revelation be out of mind, Ponder and meditate on it day and night, making sure you practice everything written in it. Then you’ll get where you’re going; then you’ll succeed. Haven’t I commanded you? Strength! Courage! Don’t be timid; don’t get discourage. God, your God, is with you every step you take.”

I was curious how many times the phrase “Be strong and courageous” shows up in the Bible. For the NIV 1984, the answer is 10 times. Moses to Joshua, God to Joshua, and the people to Joshua are some of its initial uses.

Be strong and courageous because our world needs to raise up Christ followers who are strong and courageous.

2. WE ARE ALL IN A POSITION OF LEADERSHIP

Maybe you are in a season of asking yourself Am I a Leader?
Afraid of big task and tons of responsibility?
Thinking medeocrity in your workplace like you don’t have the chance to get a promotion or your skill is at this level so my salary is only up to this level only.

Just like the character in the movie BATTLESHIP, Alex Hopper (Tactical Action Officer of the USS John Paul Jones) was in the battle field.
When his brother was killed by the aliens attacked. The Sampson and Myoko, was destroyed, USS John Paul Jones was damage and in the processes killed the commanding and executive officers, including his brother Stone Hopper. Alex sees his brother die and returns to their ship, where he is forced to take command. Although his crew never believed in him, as the only senior officer left on the ship, he is now in full command. At first he doesn’t know what he needs to do or whether it is the right decision to make.

Whether you are an introvert or an extrovert, you are a Leader!
It is ok to experience mistakes in our lifetime. We can’t improve ourselves if we don’t commit mistakes. Better to try than never at all.

Be strong and courageous when you identify with the pain of Jesus’ cry, “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me.”

Be strong and courageous when you identify with the victory of Jesus’ cry, “It is finished.”

Be strong and courageous not because you are full of yourself, but because you are filled with the Spirit.

“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)

3. WE NEED A MENTOR

As a man we take pride on the things that we know and we’re best at, we never let learning get in the picture.

Like the illustration of the Zen Master who pours the tea on the cup until it over flows, then his student said, “Master the tea is overflowing.” Then the master said, “This is like you. I can’t teach you any new technique because you already know many things.” Be an empty cup and Listen first then Lead.

Who are you following right now?
Does he/she have a big impact in your life?
Does he/she brings out the potential in you?
Do you consider a person in your life to be your life mentor?

There is no success without a successor.
-Francis J. Kong

Me, I have a lot of mentors in different areas of my life that I am accountable to. I have a mentor in my finances and being generous, another mentor in leadership and in relationship. I also have a mentor in my ministry, and lastly, a mentor in speaking.

My challenge for you today after you read this blog is to look for a mentor not only will make you a great person but will help you walk with God.
Looking inside the church is one of the best ways you can find great mentors. I found mine in a christian church in Greenhills, San Juan.
First, they must have a relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ and they are readers and doers of the Word. You can never go wrong with the wisdom of God by your side and applying it in your life. The Bible is not only the do’s and dont’s but it also gives us practical advice in our day to day lives..

Confused of Making the Right Decision?

when-youre-forced-to-make-the-right-decision

Sometimes I ask God why do people have to undergo hardship and trials? It may came to a point that you need to decide not only for yourself but for a team or a department or considering it would affect your family how will you do it?

Getting Started on the Road to Right Decision Making

So how do you get started working with God so you can begin making right decisions and showing good judgment?

1. Before make a decision surrender to Him first.

We as human being we view the right things to do when it is favorable to us or we will have a benefit on it. This is one of the famous line when it comes to decision making “what ever you do follow your heart”.
Our heart is wicked as it was describe.

Jeremiah 17:9
“The human heart is the most deceitful of all things,
 and desperately wicked.

What does God have to say to that? My question to you right now does it Glorify Him? Do you have peace in your heart? These are the questions you need to consider when making a decision. No Compromise and Justification you can not correct a mistake with another mistake.

Proverbs 16:1
We can make our own plans,
but the Lord gives the right answer.

2. Before make a decision Read & illuminate on God’s word.

The only way you’re going to get to know God and his character is to study His word. To be more Christ like meaning to build your relationship with Him. He is our creator and we are His creation. He left us a manual which is I believe in every problem we have, there will always be a solution. Read your manual (Bible) daily as advice.

Joshua 1:8 New International Version (NIV)

Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day andnight, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it.
Then you will be prosperous and successful.

Here  is the promise of God to us if we continuously read His word we will never get wrong. All the solution to our problem the bible is applicable

3. Before make a decision Pray & Wrestle with God. Talk to God

Our way of communicating to Him is by the means of praying. If we never speak to our spouse or never listen to anything our spouse might have to say to us, our marriage relationship will quickly deteriorate. It is the same way with God. Prayer is a communication with God that helps us grow closer and more intimately connected with God. You can always ask the Holy Spirit for Guidance and Wisdom in decision making. Talk to him don’t stop unless He give you the answer. God see’s the heart

Matthew 26:41 New International Version (NIV)
“Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.
The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Romans 8:26-27 New International Version (NIV)
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us
through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the
mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

4. Surround yourself with people who are further along in the journey.

This is I call my spiritual family. These are the people who can give biblical advice  not worldly advice to something that you are burdened with. These are the people that will encourage you to stand up and keep up the fight. We know if we are alone we are weak but if you have companion it is much easier to decide. Find a mentor that suits your personality and you can get along with.

Ecclesiastes 4:12 New International Version (NIV)
Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of
three strands is not quickly broken.

Star Trek Into Darkness

Done watching Star Trek Into Darkness at Lucky China Mall. ws_Star_Trek_Into_Darkness_Poster_1920x1080

I love action movies but about space movie or what I call futuristic earth, nah its not my taste. But a friend of mine ask me to watch that movie and I said ok I will try it out.

After watching I felt glad. Its not that bad after all and I illuminate something and I want to share it to you guys. This scene has given me a great impact and a lot of insights and leadership principle to take home. If I had a pen and paper I would list it down. I believe in the saying Ink is better than Think. Our brain can think of a thousand ideas but you will also forget it in just a while. So better write it down before it flew away

1. We are called to do the right thing ( Mentoring Session)

Before becoming a good leader you will first undergo to following a Mentor. Everything he is teaching and instructing means a lot cause he knows what will be the consequence if you don’t follow him.

Being a leader we have the authority over people under us. We need to follow strictly the rules and regulation of your territory. You can command them because you are superior but be wise and be careful every decision you make will affect them. Always do the right thing and pleasing to God, He is the real Commander-in-Chief.

James 4:7 ESV
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will
flee from you.

Good_bye

2. When someone says goodbye you give importance to what He is trying to say.

This was always a reminder to us because by human nature we are “Pasaway”. We don’t listen to what the mentors are trying to tell us but you came to realize it when its too late. Why wait for someone to say goodbye for you to learn. I’m telling you it wasn’t easy. Follow Now and Regret Never!

One of the famous last line of Jesus when He is on the cross that hits me a lot is the phrase “It is finished.” (John 19:30) Every time I do things that is not glorifying Him I feel condemn but I always go back to the cross because again
It is finished.

3. Sacrifice yourself for your people not people for yourself.

True leadership is being a servanthood. Serve them the way it should be and they will do it in return. Mold & push them to lead. Trust them like your family and try to develop their full potentials and trust them that they can do it. Encourage and Empower them.

One issue in leadership is to know how your people submit their selves under your authority. Check yourself and reflect how your leadership works.

John 15:13 ESV
Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

Sir Abraham Lincoln has something to say about it…

Do you have a Spiritual Family?

ghostbustersheaderMost of us when we hear the word Spiritual Family the first thing come to our mind is “Ghost” or any relative that is already dead because of the word Spirit and Family.

As I continue my walk with Jesus Christ I met different people in church and have fellowship with them. Some shares their passion, some open up their story on how they met Jesus, some of them share their experience in their work place, family issue and relationships. If you have your own family at home you should have a spiritual family in Christ.

Why do you need a Spiritual Family?

1. Someone has the authority to rebuke you because by human nature we are sinful.

Sometimes we as Christians  we can do things that is not pleasing to God the Father or does not bring glory to Him. Having a Spiritual Family is like someone is accountable of what is happening to you and can overview your growth as a Christian.

Matthew 18:15-17 New International Version (NIV)
“If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses. If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.

2. Learn from the mistakes of others. You are both accountable to each other.

One of my favorite financial speaker is “Chinkee Tan”. Great wisdom by this man and every time I had the opportunity to listen to him I still learn many things and his favorite saying “Experience is the best teacher?” No. “Experience of others is the best teacher”

Proverbs 27:17 New International Version (NIV)
 As iron sharpens iron,
 so one person sharpens another.

3. Burning coal!

Often we hear an illustration of a Burning Coal. When we fill we are not worthy for God we tend to isolate ourselves like a burning coal remove from other coals tendency is that your fire will die. These are what I like about Spiritual Family; they follow up on you, keep in touch with you, concern about you, and you could feel you are a family. On my perspective God use this people as an catalyst that would ignite your love to God.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 ESV (English Standard Version)
Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
